Reviewing Imaginaerum!

I decided to write something about the newest Nightwish album that was released today, 30th of November, my nameday. I have listened the songs separately on several times and the whole album two times straight through. I'm also listening to it right now. It's easier to write about it while listening to it.

If you haven't heard of it yet, I recommend listening to it before you read this text. I want to share my feelings and thoughts of it and maybe hear some of yours, too! The album is a coherent story and the atmosphere remains similar from beginning to end. Still, the songs differ from each other quite a lot.

While listening to this, I can not be thinking anything but the forthcoming movie. I can imagine how all the songs are fitted to the movie. The album sounds really much like a film score. If I didn't know about the forthcoming movie, I would have been shocked about how the album is built... The songs' structure and all.. As a music album alone, it works quite well - But with the movie, it will be a blast!
Taikatalvi is a short intro for the album sung by Marco. It's a slow acoustic song which somehow reminds me of Kristian Meurman singing "Lapin Kesä".
Storytime single (released on 9th of Nov.) is a simple song which has all the Nightwish elements: rising intro, heavy riff, orchestra, powerful C part with choir and catching melody. Nightwish has also tried something new - children's choir! This song is pop music with all the good rock elements, just like Nightwish's other singles.
Ghost River:
I love this song! It's weird in somehow, catching and really heavy. It's arrogant in some way! Marco sings low and Emppu's guitar playing is nasty in an awesome way. This song gets better everytime I listen to it!
Slow, Love, Slow:
If you have read some other reviews or interviews of Imaginaerum, you know this one is jazz. Jukka had to take some drum lessons and Tuomas had to spend some time among sheet music. The song gets better towards the end. I can imagine Anette singing on the piano in a small pub.
I Want My Tears Back:
I want my tears back is a song that is easy for listeners. Like other songs on this album, it, too, has Irish atmosphere with bagpipes and all. They have used the folk tone in quite many songs! Both, Marco and Anette, have their parts in this song.
This song is just amazingly weird. Anette and Marco sound like sorceress and sorcere. Well... Marco's voice is more like a troll's voice. It's hilarious and nasty in the same time. Rough song! I can only imagine how fun they have had while making this! This song also gets better everytime I listen to it.
This one is a short instrumental track. It's fast and the atmosphere is exciting. I guess it fits to the movie but in the album I just don't care about it so much. It's a little part of the film's score, nothing more.
Turn Loose The Mermaids:
I was dissapointed that Imaginaerum didn't have enough big, massive, epic songs that are typical for Nightwish. Turn loose the mermaids is a slow song but it, too, dissapointed me in some way. The Crow, The Owl and The Dove was the only real ballad on the album. This one is an "OK song". I would have been so much more satisfied if this song was replaced with a huge epic masterpiece.
Rest Calm:
Rest calm is a medium-speed song. I mean it's between a slow ballad and fast rock song, like Scaretale for example. Verses are played with an electric guitar but choruses are played with an acoustic guitar. It's very catchy and has a children's choir in it. One of my favourites.
The Crow, The Owl And The Dove:
The only real ballad on the album. It's composed by the band's bassist, Marco Hietala. When I heard this song for the first time, I was a bit dissapointed. I heard it after Storytime because it's the second single from the album, if I'm not wrong. I like the lyrics and the atmosphere. Gets better when you have heard it a couple of times!
The Last Ride Of The Day:
This is absolutely my favourite at the moment! It has everything that Nightwish song has to have! The intro is massive and catchy. I couldn't even sleep last night 'cause it was in my head! The melody of the chorus is so beautiful and catchy that I just had to learn it on piano, and I did. The song is easy for everyone to listen to and that's why I guess it's going to be your favourite! It's definitely the last ride of the day...
Song Of Myself:
This song is Tuomas Holopainen's self-image. The ending is touching in some way. The song lasts for 13:40 and the talking section is a large part of it. It has many band members' close friends and relatives in it and Tuomas himself.. This one is the end, and it's going to fit to the movie in a great way.. Just guessing!
So that was it! Instrumental song called Imaginaerum, is the whole album compressed in one package! This doesn't only sound like a film score, it is a film score!
The album wasn't a let down and I'm sure that it's going to get better and better. I was expecting something like this! Because, hey, it's for the movie. I was dissapointed in the amount of song tho'. There is 13 tracks and they include a short intro, a short istrumental song, an OK song (Turn loose the mermaids) and the outro, Imaginaerum. And what remains of them is 9 good songs. After four years of waiting, 9 good NW songs is quite a small amount. "It's not about the quantity, it's about the quality", they say. It's true and I'm pretty happy of the album. And now it's time to wait for the Sonata Arctica's new album which comes before summer 2012! :')

What did you think about the album or some of its songs? :P

The first snowflake fallen to the ground

It has been ±0°c outside and rained all the time. I just escorted (don't know if escort is the right word for it) Meri to railway station and when I got back home, it was snowing! The temperature is still around zero but it's not pouring water anymore, it's pouring snow. I took a video of it while I was walking at Lielahti, Tampere.

I don't remember a single year when the first snow would have fallen this late. Last year the ground was covered with a thick layer of snow on 14.10! Is there going to be any snow on christmas or new year's eve? Finland is known for its white and cold winter and santa claus. I want a classic snowy christmas and new year's eve!

Christmas illuminations and melting snow

December is right there around the corner and I haven't got any gifts for anyone yet. I'm so excited about december. On 17th day I have my 18th birthday. Legal adulthood, haha. Christmas eve is exactly one week after that and then again a week after that it's new year's eve. And of course holidays start before christmas!

Star in our living room and Donna with candelabra
We have put our christmas illuminations, a star to our living room and candelabra on. They help me to bear the darkness outside. Tampere city's staff have also put their winter lights on in the city's main street. They get me in the good mood. Now I should just go shopping some christmas stuff and get ideas for gifts. I'm really waiting for the bright golden sunrises and white winter mornings. I can't stand the wet weather and darkness without snow and nice mornings. You see, I don't hate everything about winter. Just the coldness and eternal darkness of it.

Let's forget the dark winter design. It's dark when I go to school, it's dark when I come home from school. This is so depressing!

I wanted to have a simple design in the blog so I replaced the dark winter river picture with a beautiful landscape that I found on google a long time ago. The blog headline is simpler than ever but it still needs something. I'm going to change its color or something. Well anyways... as you have seen, I change some things in the design when I'm on the mood.

I've wanted to talk about my instruments for a long time. You all are going to be freaking bored about that! But still, I decided to write about my piano & Yamaha keys, Ibanez & acoustic guitar & Roland amp and drums. Just for my fun, haha!

The gloomy autumn hasn't got all of my strenght yet, so I did record the new song, Strike a Chord! It's on YouTube just like my other "demos". Recording was painful as always but the final product ended up okay. I can't get the quality any better without expensive hardware and software.

The end of the fall / beginning of winter is depressing. I have my own song for that topic too, "The Cold and Gloomy Night". Its recordings are in progress!

The blog text about some of my instruments are going to be written today or couple of days later :) There is going to be good and bad sides of them and just some random stories and facts.

Have a depressing end of fall, y'all!
Just kidding.

Saturday night was special to me. A perfect sight, a world divine.

After sauna, Meri and I made a pizza and roasted some original american marshmallows. Crispy top and soft on the inside. It was tasty and felt weird in the mouth. We also watched a weirdo movie, "Drive".

At midnight we wanted to have a little walk with Geo, Meri's dog. It was freezing out there, -10c°, and the sky was clear. We walked to a road and saw the open sky with hundreds of stars. The stars shone brightly and the whole situation felt like a dream. There can't be anything so beautiful as that! Meri and I decided to take Geo inside and put more clothes so we could come back to see the beautiful sky again.

It was still pretty cold but I couldn't think about that when the moment was so magical. There we were, my lady and the starry sky. We were lying in the middle of the road just to get the best view. Sky was dark blue and you could even see the furthest stars. There was so many of them. The idea of infinite space was so facinating. It looked like the sky would have been 2D, like a  cover of the world. But sometimes I could imagine it as a 3D. "What if I could fly through the sky and by the stars and go on forever..." I can't even explain the feelings I got.

We would have missed so much if we hadn't come back. We saw more than five shooting stars in an hour! I'm not even sure if I have seen a shooting star before or not. They were amazing and one of them split the sky in two. It was great to experience this with Meri. Stars are on of the nature's incredible miracles.

Read a clearer version of this story :') http://cloudrivers.blogspot.com/2011/11/seventh-shooting-star.html

Here is my song called Constellations (=tähtikuviot).

PS. "Strike a Chord" is ready: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFWjCNXotPc

Strike a Chord

"I'm not feeling well today. I got a flu but my body temperature is ok. So what else could I do than write my blog while others are in school? Maybe two essays for finnish class... Dammit! I shall write them later..."

That's what I wrote on 9th day of November. Actually, I wrote a whole text back then but I had a problem with the editing software for the drumming video. Althought this all is somewhat old text, I still want to publish this text with the video that I edited today!

On 8/11, I was driving around Lielahti, Tampere. Everything went quite well and I'm really starting to get the feeling of driving alone some day. It will be great - More "freedom" again!

Nightwish's song called Storytime (Imaginaerum, 30/11/2011) started to play on radio 7/11. Finnish radio stations played it all the time and people were quite happy about it. Some said that the song let them down, they excepted more from Nightwish. I think the song is good as a single. Simple and easy for all kind of listeners. Ghost Love Score is one of the best songs from Nightwish but it wouldn't be a good single. Storytime was released 9/11 in Finland and 11/11/11 in other countries. The music video is up on YouTube!

And of course I got the Sonata Arctica: Live in Finland -DVD on time, 9/11. I watched and listened all the four discs and it was incredible! Hope you all see it.

I decided to make a simple and short video of my newest song, "Strike a Chord". It's very fun to play with drums and guitar! Speaking of guitars... My Ibanez's plugin is broken again and I have to take it to the guitar repair shop. That's why I made the video with drums.

Anyway.. This song is really simple altho' it has some funny time signature changes. The song was made when I had fun with composing. It felt easy and pleasant.

I recorded this with three cameras because I wanted to have many different angles. Windows Live Movie Maker fucked the whole thing up so I had to use only one angle. The background track is a MIDI file from Guitar Pro 5!

The song has been ready for about two weeks and I have played it only few times. It's not hard to see that on the video. But hey, this is a blog. Not an official channel or anything. Everyone can see it and it's okay but I can do better. And when I do better, I shall upload it then. Now this video is only available in this blog.

Guitar is going to be repaired this week and then I will start thinking about recording my two new songs! :)

Storytime = November!

This is the first day of November. The month that I have waited for so long!

Two of my favourite bands, Sonata Arctica and Nightwish, are going to release some badass stuff in November! The best of the bests, Sonata Arctica, releases their second live dvd on 9/11. "Live in Finland" will include a live show which was recorded in Oulu Club Teatria last spring, parts of a live show that was recorded in august, 2009 and a huge amount of bonus features like making-ofs and music videos. And that was just the DVDs.. The digibook will include those two DVDs + two CDs of the Club Teatria and Sonata Arctica Open Air! Sonata's last album, The Days of Grays, was released in 2009 and their last DVD was released in 2006, so the new DVD is very welcome! They are also making their new album right now. It doesn't have a name yet and no one has heard any demos. The new album will hit the stores in 2012. I am so excited!

Nightwish has become more and more important for me during last couple of years. Their long-waited album, Imaginaerum, comes to stores in my name day, 30/11! There is a little piece of their new music video on YouTube (beneath). It's from the "Storytime" single which comes to stores in the same day as the Sonata DVD, 9/11! Imaginaerum is going to be really really huge and it will include everything from heavy symphonic metal to simple pop rock and even jazz! Tuomas said in an interview that Jukka had to take some drum lessons because the jazz song was so difficult to play. The album is composed for the forthcoming Nightwish movie with the same name. That's why Imaginaerum's songs differ a lot from each other. I have never seen a movie from a band and I'm so thrilled because of Imaginaerum. Iron Maiden has made a movie, Flight 666, but I haven't seen it yet.

I started driving school today! My dad teaches me to drive. I got my driving permission today and we went straight to the point. I drove around Siivikkala and it went really well. We didn't have more than 20 minutes because my sister needed a car. I'm really looking forward to getting a driver's license.

Two new songs are ready and they're waiting to be recorded. I'm back in composing again haha! My latest song was ready about 8 months ago and now I suddenly have maid two new songs. My latest upload on YouTube is the new version of One without a name (renamed The One Without A Name) and it was uploaded in 11th of July so it's been a while from uploading anything. I hope I get my guitar and other recording stuff ready quickly so I can start recording the new songs! ;)

My sister moved away (for the 2nd time) in August and now she moved back home again. When she moved back home for the first time I wrote a blog text about it. Now it's all the same. It sucks and so on... But now it's even worse. She has TWO dogs now! Dina and Sera are pissing everywhere and now I, too, should look after them, AGAIN.

Rock and piss. It couldn't be better!
